Let me tell you a story about how THIS ALL STARTED…
The Story Behind the Art…
At the beginning of this year, my perspective abruptly shifted when I had a health scare. After the storm passed, I felt strongly called to create something different than ever before...because I was different.
While I was going through it, I did what most of us do and looked online for answers. I stumbled upon stories of women who bravely faced the worst and found a way to thrive. I struggled to make sense of the unfairness of it all while dealing with facing the unknown.
To cope, I talked to my guardian angel, my grandmother Angeline. It's a huge comfort to know she is watching over me. I began lighting candles every day while I was working, saying prayers for protection and strength as I lit the flame. I remembered a moment in a church in Lima, Peru many years ago and bought milagros to hang in my studio where I could see them. To me they symbolized protection and love; they brought me comfort.
This little ritual i developed somehow helped me let go and release some stress. After things settled down, the stories of the brave women I had read about were swimming around in my head as I sat in my studio with a candle burning and milagro on the walls.
Sketches of women, milagros, talismans of protection, and guardian angels began to emerge from my pencil.
Image-making for me is kind of like writing in a diary. But instead of writing in it daily, I write one big entry for an entire period of time. One painting for me could encompass whole chapters in my life, like a breakup, a trip to a new place, a life transition or in this case a health scare.
Eventually, I found a way to tell this story with my paintbrush.
The paintings in this collection all depict women wearing a heart milagro around their neck with a string that is connected to a bird or guardian angel. Their faces are peaceful and happy as if to say, I've let go of my burden and I am protected. The backgrounds of the painting are filled with pattern or flora and in some the woman is afloat in a body of water symbolizing the chaos of life as well as her ability to stay afloat.
I think the Role of an artist is to bring beauty and inspiration.
The imagery brought to life through their internal worlds can encourage people to think about things in new ways.
Sometimes a painting is just beautiful for the sake of being beautiful and sometimes it holds meaning.
It is my deepest wish that you experience a moment of happiness when you see my work; and that the meaning it carries lifts you up and reminds you of the magic that surrounds you.
A home is more than just a place to lie your head at night.
Your home is a representation of you and what is important to you and your family. Everything you choose to place in your home can tell or story or simply bring light to your everyday.
