Inspired by Henri Matisse the “cut outs”

This ornament collection was inspired by French painter, Henri Matisse.  In his twilight years, ill and unable to paint he began working on what would be his final body of work. The Cut Outs were works of art created with paper painted with brightly colored gouache and then cut into shapes and assembled to create his desired form.  

I’ve always found it fascinating that in the last decade of his life, this incredible master painter turned to creating with scissors and painted paper.  Though it was new, its development was a natural extension of key ideas that defined Matisse’s lifelong artistic practice - color and line.. Through the cut-outs, he was finally able to unite these two branches of his practice. He described the process of making them as both “cutting directly into color” and “drawing with scissors.”   

These cut outs inspired my holiday collection with it’s focus on impactful color stories and simple, bold shapes.
